Crumbs, I think I've answered my own question. Bookends 10 is a free upgrade of Bookends 9 if the latter was purchased after July 1.

I'm on the verge of taking the plunge, but I've just noticed that, according to the Redlers website, the version of Bookends that comes in the offer is version 9. Is there any hope of getting 10 in a similar deal or is the website just out of date?

Of course you are right! The trick was that one must first click on (select) the thing in the 'element list'.

When I've had time, I've been playing with Mellel in the hope of emigrating from Word. The latest version seems excellent. I think this is the only thing keeping me from dropping Word altogether. Even if I have to switch from Endnote to Bookends, it might be worth it if this gets working in Mellel. I think it's a great app.

Thanks again for all the replies. At this point I think that I will leave Mellel and Bookends (demos) on my computer and wait and see what happens around the time of the Word 2007 'upgrade'. At that point I will either emigrate to Mellel or keep trudging the hard road of Word. In the meantime I will...
