I wonder if this could be from the "keep" options in the paragraph style.
What do you have for lines at start, lines at end, and keep with next?

Re: Slow while editing
I bet the performance is tied to iCloud operations. I set up a test "lorem ipsum" file with a dozen images. I've done this before but I think I just tested things like scrolling and finding unique text. Images didn't seem to slow editing down. Either with or without images sprinkled throug...

Re: Search for long phrases
That's a nice touch, highlighting the found results.
The negated search means "search for anything that doesn't match the pattern." It's looking for 300 or more things that don't match.
I'm not sure if the original problem is a bug, or a consequence of some other logic of searching.

Re: Search for long phrases
Well, drat. I missed the target. How about this? For simplicity's sake, let's start with sentences ending with a period. Enter a dot in the Find window. That's a dot character, not a regex single character wildcard. Double click it. Once the dot is highlighted, choose "group" from the tria...

Re: Search for long phrases
I think the problem is with repetition for any character. There seems to be a workaround, though. If you want to find 300 or more repetitions of any character, click the "any character" glyph to highlight it. Use the triangle menu to group it. A group of just one thing, "any character...

I'd like to learn more about citations. I've got Bookends but have only scratched the surface with it.
What citation software are you using?

Very kind of you! I like to explore issues brought up here because I've found it an excellent way to learn how Mellel goes about business. The more I learn, the more I appreciate the insight applied to Mellel.

Re: Two Problems with 5.1 3r1
On the background color, you can set that in two places. A section style can have a background color. You can also set the background color as an attribute. I think the new attribute will set the background color for the current page and all following pages. The section style applies to everything i...

Re: Mixing Bullet and Numbered lists
I didn't catch the numbering just on a sublevel - your solution is much better. Not sure I'll ever need anything like that, but I'm going to remember it.

Re: Mixing Bullet and Numbered lists
I think there are two ways to do what you need. With lists, you can start a bulleted list, switch to a numbered, back to bulleted, and if you want to continue a numbered list you can use the "start at" feature in the list palette to resume numbering where you left off. There are two downsi...

Re: Footnotes & Endnotes
Yes, that's possible. It's not bending any rules at all. Use Insert->Note->Footnote to set a footnote to appear on the same page as the reference. Insert->Note->Endnote will insert a note that will appear at the end of the document. That's sort of the out-of-the-box way. "Footnote" and &qu...

Re: What kind of "remarks" do you enter in Remarks?
I haven't made much use of the remarks feature, but it's nice that it's there. If you turn on "show bookmarks" in the outline pane, it could help to see a note-to-self associated to bookmarks and titles.

Re: transfering style sheets
DavidH has the best solution. I think the App Store version of Mellel uses a different path to the templates and style set files. Mine are buried underneath a Containers folder. It's more work, but if you can't find the right folder to copy another way to transfer styles is to create empty documents...

Re: Any tips for displaying source code in your document?
I think Pandoc will create syntax highlighting. I wasn't able to get it to work, but I suspect that was my fault, not Pandoc's. Or, if you have a programming editor you might have everything you need. I opened a Python script in BBEdit and used File->Save as styled text. That created an RTF file Mel...

Re: Applying page style changes entire document instead of point of application forward
This confused me the first time I saw it too, but it's actually pretty easy. Check out the book template that's part of the standard Mellel installation. It has different page styles in different parts of the template. Basically, page styles work on page ranges. A page range is all the pages between...
