Re: Shading background (not just lines of text)

I don't know if I have an optimal solution. Here's some food for thought. A section in Mellel has a background color. The margins for a section come from the page setup. So, what's a section? Every document starts out with one page section, running from first character through last, inclusive. If yo...

Re: Looking for suggestions on starting to working on a book...

I like the division of labor. Styles set appearance. Auto-titles set structure. Think about auto-titles almost like mini-macros. If you enter a chapter title as just a style, it's just text. If you use an auto-title for a chapter heading, it inserts document variables, the chapter number, and anythi...

Re: Adjust Margins in PhD Dissertation

You read carefully. Critique is always helpful, but I was thinking tips regarding how to use Mellel in general would be nice to see. For full disclosure, both my maternal grandfather and his father were ministers. I don't think I carry that part of family tradition with the fidelity and honor I shou...

Re: Adjust Margins in PhD Dissertation

Hey, Icelander - I'd like to see any tips you have time to post. Good catch on the auto-titles. I didn't even look. My preference is to use any abstraction a tool has to offer over ad-hoc options. Lately, I've started using F2 (character style variant B) for bold, F3 for italic, and F4 should I ever...

Re: Adjust Margins in PhD Dissertation

On a quick glance, it looks like the page margins in your preface were adjusted by ad-hoc change. Your preface is in Default+ page style. The following pages are in the Numbered Footers+ style. The plus indicates there have been changes have been made to the style. One way to fix this is to open the...

Re: Importing old autotitle formats into Mellel 5.1

DavidH is right on the money. Here's a few more thoughts. Auto-titles are part of Mellel style sets. It sounds like you are editing a style set that is local to a single document. Or, you may have the same style set local to a number of documents, but still local to each of those documents. If you e...

Re: TOC setup margins and indent

i don't have any trouble dragging tabs from tab well to the ruler when editing an autotitle or a paragraph style, but the trick is to drag it to the local ruler in the style, not the ruler as seen in the document. If I add the tab well to the document's toolbar i can drag from there to the document'...

Nice Mellel mention

The Tinderbox crowd has a weekly meetup forum on YouTube. This weekend, the topic was an interview with Jonathan Ashwell, creator of Bookends. There was a request to see how Bookends worked in (sorry for the harsh language) Word. Ashwell said, "I'm going to show this with Mellel... For those of...

Re: Chicago of Manual of Style template?

IEEE style, included with Mellel, is said to be based on Chicago. If you wanted to start with that, open a new document using the IEEE template. Go into Styles->Edit style sets. Highlight the diamond style, which is the local style set in the IEEE template, and click the little two-page icon below t...

Re: Formatting Questions

Forgot a couple of handy tips you may have already found. If you double click a reference symbol in the text, whether it's a footnote number or an asterisk, you'll jump to the associated note. Double clicking the symbol in the note will jump you to the reference in your text. Right click the referen...

Re: Formatting Questions

First thought - If you click Insert->Note->Edit Note Attributes... you'll get the Note Streams window. Note streams are differently numbered sequences of notes. Note styles control how note streams appear. Your "Footnote" stream uses the note style "Footnote (Arabic)+". The plus ...

Re: two independent columns of text

When I need something more than is possible in Mellel, I use a desktop publishing application, Affinity Publisher. It's very close to the capabilities of Adobe inDesign with one major difference. Adobe inDesign is $20.99 per month. Affinity Publisher is $69.99 one time. You can write in Publisher bu...

I wonder if this could be from the "keep" options in the paragraph style.

What do you have for lines at start, lines at end, and keep with next?

Re: Slow while editing

I bet the performance is tied to iCloud operations. I set up a test "lorem ipsum" file with a dozen images. I've done this before but I think I just tested things like scrolling and finding unique text. Images didn't seem to slow editing down. Either with or without images sprinkled throug...

Re: Search for long phrases

That's a nice touch, highlighting the found results.

The negated search means "search for anything that doesn't match the pattern." It's looking for 300 or more things that don't match.

I'm not sure if the original problem is a bug, or a consequence of some other logic of searching.
