My guess is that this happened by pressing delete while in the outline. This causes the selected section to be deleted and there is no "Are you sure?" dialog. I wonder if we could have a preference to turn on a confirmation dialogue for deletions from the outline. With undo in its current...

If you have activated the auto backup, you would be able to recover your deleted text. Have a look at ~/Library/Application Support/Mellel/Backup
