Replying to the original post: I always assumed the aim for Mellel is to be a word processor that doesn't suck. That means it has to have support for modern standards: Unicode, OpenType, XML, and some kind of regular expression find and replace -- all now in place. It also has to be utterly stable a...

Is it true that TextEdit can now use glyphs in an OpenType font that Mellel cannot? I didn't know that. Do you have an example? The ones you mentioned are AAT. I think so. I only gave AAT examples because these fonts come with the operating system (and because Zapfino is fun to play with). There ar...

OS X did not offer support for any OpenType layout tables until 10.4 Thanks Tom, I stand corrected. Still, the point stands that you can now get at glyphs in TextEdit (and a lot of other apps) that you can't yet use in Mellel. It's a bit of a shame, especially given Mellel's early lead. unfortunate...

Unless a font contains the OpenType layout tables required for the specific behavior you want, it just will not happen, regardless of the options available in Mellel menus. Indeed. It would be good if the options which are unavailable were greyed out in the OpenType dropdown menu in Mellel. Cardo -...

Nvalvo has said it all, almost, and very well explained, too. One minor point: It has a whole slew of features, and a full featured OpenType font in a full featured OpenType application (pretty much only Adobe InDesign) can do amazing things. Beyond the features Mellel makes available, some of the f...

I think that the extensible full screen view (if that is the name) wouldn't disturb anybody (you can always exit it with Esc) and could help more people to profit this feature. Agreed. It would be good to be able to toggle the outline pane and the palettes (separately) in full-screen mode. On my 12...

You could persuade them to upgrade...Is there a solution for this?
But it might be worth a bit more investigation. Word 97 on PCs apparently does have Unicode support. http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/utiliti ... tml#word97
So it could be a font problem.

I think the request here is to make non-breaking spaces display differently from ordinary spaces (when 'show spaces' is on) rather then as identical light blue dots, as they do currently. In Word, for example, when 'show invisibles' is on, you see an ordinary space as a dot and a non-breaking space ...

This is what I use the replace style option for. There may be slight variations that really refer to one paragraph style, so in one document I mostly end up with one to 3 original styles that are converted into the same paragraph style. But it works excellent. I think you must be a lot more patient...

these diacritics are not exported correctly by the above-mentioned way That's not my experience. I just created a Mellel document with e acute, o with circumflex, i with two dots, c with cedilla and a with grave accent, just using the standard Mac method of producing them with option-key dead-key c...
