PDF to Mellel - Hebrew

Post by abe-ariel@013.net »

Platform MacBookPro 2020, Big Sur M1, OS 11.6. Mellel 5.08r6
How do I convert a PDF Hebrew document (most probably originally written in WORD)
to Mellel.
Thanks

U don't know of any way to do this

What you need is the WORD source

Try the shareware File Juicer. I guess they have a demo which should be enough for you to convert the PDF to a .rtf. Not sure whether you can convert the PDF to a .docx
Then you import the .rtf / .docx into Mellel.

You should be able to import the text, but I don't know about the formatting…

My son produced the answer, which is good news to Hebrew Mac users.
I tested it on my new MBP Big Sur M1. I did not try my older MacBoo-Pro. See:
https://www.i2pdf.com/hebrew-pdf-to-word
It converted the Hebrew PDF text to Hebrew PAGES (I do not have WORD). Results for text were very good, numbers require minor rectification. The Hebrew direction is kept. Bottom line: highly satisfactory.
The PAGES document can be opened by Mellel by dragging. Results a little inferior, but still much better than other solutions I know of.
Warning: Max 20 pps in one go.
I suggest members try and report their results here.
Good luck!

Thanks for sharing i2PDF. It's free, and thus better for casual use than File Juicer.

Just for the record: I took a closeer look at File Juicer. I had it installed on my machine, but I almost never need it. I created a PDF in Hebrew and threw it at File Juicer which quickly converted it into a docx, a rtf and a txt files (three files altogether.) All files could be directly opened in Mellel. In the docx and rtf the basic formatting was preserved, but auto-titles were not retained. I did not test colors, tables or other advanced formatting.

You can also extract PDF text with Mac Automator.

1. Open Automator in the Applications folder.
2. Create a new file from File > New. Choose "Application" as a type for the document.
3. Select PDF in the first left column and “Extract PDF text” in the second left column. Then --> drag it to the workflow (the third column which reads 'Drag actions or files here to build your workflow.')
4. Choose Rich Text (instead of Plain Text) as Output
5. Choose save output to Desktop
6. Now save the automation and you'll see the application on your desktop or wherever you saved it.
7. Drag PDF file(s) to that App icon and you're done.

There seems to be a size limit. I couldn't convert books, for example.
