Greek fonts

Post by Timotheus »

Can anyone suggest me some Greek fonts, and tell me where I can find them? I need them for transcribing classical (Platonic, Aristotelian ecc.) Greek, not for modern Greek.

For Koine Greek, I have found several that work. I like Gentium Alt the best, but also Cardo. Check out SIL fonts. And I have others for viewing specialized web pages: SIL Galatia, SL Greek, and SPAtlantis.

Here is another source for ancient languages: Alphabetum Unicode

Hope this helps.

I know very well Gentium: it is free, and this is good.
Linguist's Software's fonts are better, better, better (if you want spend some money): Odyssaea is beautiful.

In addition, I recommend the following keyboard layout for classical & koine greek: http://www.ntresources.com/font/mackeyboard.htm
This really is worth the trouble of installing. All the accents, etc are placed in logical places for an English keyboard. Eg. the smooth breathing accent is on the ] key, the acute accent is on the / key, etc, etc, etc
I used to use the plain old polytonic keyboard layout that comes with mac, but this one is so much better that it has made my greek typing much easier.

BTW, I use Gentium as a font.
