Because other people want to use comments that are accessible to MS Office. Mellel is my preferred writing tool, but I have to use NeoOffice because of this issue. How about having multimarkdown importing and exporting? There are already many great plain text editors on the iPad, and implementing MMD compatibility would likely be a much shorter and better use of developer time.
MMD's syntax allows headers, italics, bold, footnotes and tables, which could presumably be translated into auto-titles, character variations, and footnotes in Mellel - maybe tables are too difficult, I don't know.
