Workaround for margin numbers / Workaround für Randnummern

Post by subzero »

Unfortunately, there is no direct way to insert margin numbers in Mellel, as they are needed in jurisprudential texts. The function "Line Numbering", where paragraphs can also be numbered, is only suitable for a rough numbering of paragraphs or lines, which does not meet the requirements of a publication. This is because: there is no internal connection between margin note and paragraph, nor is there a technical link; paragraphs are also numbered by headings, which is undesirable.

Ways to insert margin numbers in Mellel:

A. By use of tables (Quick and Dirty)

Inserting a 2-column table. In column 1 the margin number is inserted, in column 2 the text belonging to the margin number. For subsequent texts and margin numbers, one row is inserted each time.

Advantage: Fast procedure
Disadvantage: Misuse of tables for styling, although tables should serve as an orderly presentation of information; document becomes bulky and less flexible; only recommended for short texts, for longer ones more effort is worthwhile.

B. Using outline elements, paragraph styles and character styles

This is a workaround, but it works quite well.

The function "Outline elements" is used for the margin numbers. This has the advantage that tables are not needed to display margin numbers next to a paragraph. In addition, the margin numbers are automatically updated this way.

Each margin number becomes an outline element in the tag flow variant. This should not be displayed in the table of contents.
The text is simply written next to the margin number inserted in this way and linked to a paragraph style sheet that provides an automatic margin to the document. This way, the margin number is at the edge of the document and the actual text is right next to it, slightly indented. The result is visually exactly as you want it. The margin numbers can now be deleted and inserted as desired, with the remaining margin numbers updating automatically. If the margin numbers are to be removed and the text moved to the margin instead, this can also be done simply by deleting the outline layer and removing the indentation in the paragraph style sheet for the text.

The outline element "margin number" is defined to display the number and a tab. This is followed by the text. If this paragraph is followed by a paragraph without a margin number, then this paragraph would start at the same level as the margin number without indentation. Since this is not desired, a copy of the current paragraph format is taken as the format for the following paragraph, but an indentation is additionally defined.

Even though the margin numbers are now part of the paragraph, they can still be formatted (all at the same time) separately from the text of the paragraph, since separate formatting can be assigned to the margin numbers as outline elements. To do this, first create a new character format "Margin numbers", then configure the appearance of the margin numbers in it. Then open the "Edit Outline Flows" dialog, select the previously created outline element "Margin Number", select the text that appears in the right-hand window and click on the character format "Margin Numbers" just created in the "Character" palette.
Now the margin numbers are no longer influenced by the rest of the paragraph format and can be designed separately from the paragraph text using the "Margin numbers" character format. The paragraph text can also be designed separately from the margin numbers.

Möglichkeiten, Randziffern in Mellel einzufügen:

A. Mittels Tabellen (Quick and Dirty)

Upper text in English:

You are right. With the above workaround, the margin numbers are always on the left by default.

You can, however, use a peculiarity of Mellel to make the margin numbers also appear on the right, namely the inversion of the notation from left-to -right to right-to-left.

However, since this causes the end-of-sentence character to be misplaced, this only works correctly if
  • the margin number is not next to the text paragraph (unfortunately, this is exactly what you want in legal texts) or
  • the text does not need a punctuation mark next to the margin number (i.e. for headings).
Furthermore, you should first set the right margin numbers in this way when the document is finished, because if something else shifts, you suddenly have the margin numbers on the wrong page on the even or odd pages.

Setting margin numbers in Mellel is already a stopgap. But setting both right and left margin numbers is a double emergency solution: it works within the limited scope but is damn inconvenient (especially for an extensive ZPO textbook).
