References in Figure Captions

Post by Till »

As far as I see, when you try to insert a Bookends-reference in any auto-title it just happens nothing. This attempt might seem a bit weird but because figure captions are actually handled by auto-titles that is a real matter for me and I think references in figure captions are not so strange in scientific papers.
So, am I doing it right or is it already possible? When not, should it not be possible?
If – some day – we get proper figure captions which are promised for a long time, I think references therein should be possible.

Best regards,
Till

I think references in figure captions are not so strange in scientific papers.
• How would such references look like?

You can insert a citation on the same line *after* the figure caption, like this:
Figure 1: The Icelandic Band KALEO [12]

But not *in* the caption, like this:
Figure 1: The Icelandic Band [12] KALEO

However, if you really want a citation to appear in the caption, you can type it manually.

A caption might look like this:

"Figure 1: Average grain yield of wheat in Germany from 1961 to 2020 in comparison to the experimental genetic trend and the resulting residual trend. data: (FAOSTAT, 2021), year 2020 (Destatis, 2020)."

Of course, cheating solutions are possible, but that contradicts the concise way of Mellel where every functional text element is a corresponding object.

Hello Till,

Thank you for the example. Having a citation in this place makes fully sense.

Take a look at the screenshot. Isn't this exactly what you want?

Yes, thanks! That's what I want.
But I still want to advocate for a cleaner and consistent solution, if there is no good reason to prohibit references in auto-titles.

But this IS an absolutely clean and consistent solution and looks exactly the way you want it! (The citations are genuine and real.)
On this second screenshot the auto-title is selected (so you can see where it begins and where it ends.)

• How would an example look like where you enter a citation *in* the auto-title (provided it were possible)?
