Is it possible to create multiple dedicated tables of contents - like for the actual content, for figures, tables etc?
This would be pretty essential for my PhD theses.

I use different Auto-Titles to accomplish this. The normal (hierarchical / chapter) Auto-Titles are then put into a part of the TOC that is seperate from the other Auto-Title streams (in my case those are photo, graphic, transcript).
When I insert a TOC the TOC is produced in one section, first the chapter entries and then separate blocks for photo, graphic and transcript.
