I'm using Bookends as reference manager in combination with Mellel. To produce a citation like "Lukina et al. (1999) showed, that…" it's possible to forward the citation with a "%" (%Lukina et al., 1999, #632) to get only the year of publication, but it is necessary to hard code Lukina et al.
Is there a way to make both parts depending on the reference?

Re: Citation with author named within the paper
It's straightforward if your format doesn't require you to have the year in parentheses - in this case you could use the * symbol to specify No Enclosing Punctuation. So depending on how you have set up your citation options in Formats Manager you should have: "Lukina et. al 1999 showed that..."

Thanks a lot for your reply. My format does require to have the year in parentheses. Any suggestions for this case?

Re: Citation with author named within the paper
If it's a once-off case, the easiest thing is to enter the "Create Temporary Citations with Modifiers" dialogue window (by pressing Command + CTRL + Y in Bookends), select "No enclosing punctuation" and enter "Lukina et. al " in the "Precede citation with the text:" area.
Which style are you using, by the way?

I'm using APA-5. If I try your proposed process, I don't know how to place the '%', that the original reference is reduced to the year.

Use the "authors-in-front" metacharacter, ^
