Hey, that's a nice mystery.

My guess is you have "track changes" enabled. The vertical bar is showing where changes have been made.

You've got a couple of choices for getting rid of the vertical bar, assuming it's from change tracking.

If you want to keep tracking changes, then start by turning on the annotations pane. That's either View->Annotations pane or click the little sidebar-like button on the gray bar at the top of the editing window. It appears when change tracking is on and has "display mode" "author" and buttons for pause, previous, and next (up and down arrows).

Each place where there's a vertical bar there will be an annotation showing the author who made the change and some notes about the change. You accept or reject the change with the checkmark and X buttons in the annotation.

Accepting or rejecting a change gets rid of the vertical bar.

The display mode controls how changed text is displayed. You can show the original text or the changed text, and you have a couple of options for showing the altered region. Page 373 in the Mellel Guide PDF (Help->Mellel Guide) describes them.

You can filter for changes made by a specific author, and you can pause change tracking.

The vertical bar will also disappear if you turn off change tracking with View->Edit->Turn off track changes.

That option will ask you to accept or reject any pending changes. If you go through with turning off change tracking Mellel will delete its database of changes.

Before you print your MS you should accept or reject every change, or turn off change tracking altogether. The vertical bar appears in the printed output.

Hope that helps!

An addition to the helpful reply of Amontillado, you can also pause track changes. Click the pause button in the track changes bar and changes you make will not be tracked.
So if you wish to insert a TOC without having to accept or reject all changes (as you would if you turned off track changes) you can click the pause button, insert the toc and click the pause button again.
