Narrative ("in text") citation format - Mellel + Bookends

Post by caw »

There's an old thread on this, and this example is from that thread (with some quotes from the thread)
I wonder if there are any updates - in-text citations are pretty standard now in some environments.

https://forum.mellel.com/viewtopic.php?t=1666

Let's say we have a reference:

Lenin, 1964, #1234565

We can get this after scanning:
…as Lenin (Lenin 1964) argues,…
instead but we want
…as Lenin (1964) argues,…
And here is the info needed for a fix:
to suppress the name in a rendered citation you have to enter a % in front of the citation. I.e. you double-click the citation and then you put the % in front of the non-rendered citation in the upper box – this should look something like this

%Lenin, 1964, #1234565
The % suppresses the author's name (as desired) but that means we have to type it in... or else we get
…as (1964) argues,…
This means I have to add the author's name manually. Hehe, incredibly, some things were easier to do with latex! I could bring it up as an issue for future improvements as this has to do with mellel's formatting.
This format is precisely what \citet{Lenin1984} achieves. The name of the author is inserted into the body of the text, and the date in parens follows.

So we don't have to type the name (as we do if we use %)

I am using Bookends + Mellel - I wonder if anyone has a solution to this?

with thanks

In Nisus, for example, entering
{^Schein et al., 1990, #14690}

(with the caret ^ after the opening brace) produces, after scanning:
Schein et al. (1990)
with the name entered and the date in parens.

In Mellel, inserting the reference from Mellel, and then adding the "%" at the start produces:
(1990)
and I have to add the author's name (and the et al. if needed etc) manually.

If you're using Mellel with Bookends, adding a caret to the start of the in-text code produced by Bookends gives you the author name(s) outside the parentheses and the date inside, just as it does in NisusWriter Pro. The main difference is that in Mellel, you need to find the in-text codes visually and insert the carat manually rather than searching for a special delimiter character as in Nisus. This isn't mentioned in the Mellel Guide, but it's in the documentation for Bookends.
