cancel converting text to citations

Post by Maximus2021 »

I wonder is it possible to cancel conversion text to citations?
It is useful when you need to bulk edit citations (you can't manipulate with citations after conversion).

At the moment there is no automatic way to convert citation objects back into text but you can certainly change the citations after the text-to-citations conversion.

If you find yourself unable to edit citations inline (while editing the document text) this is likely because you are trying to edit the formatted citation and not the citation, usually in "Live Bibliography" mode which keeps showing the citations in formatted mode.

You can always edit a citation by double-clicking it and editing the "Citation" field (not the formatted citation which is maintained by Bookends)
If you want to see the citation in non-final form while working you can do the following
1. Turn off "Live Bibliography", if turned on.
2. Click the "unscan" button - this will turn all citations to show the Citation text and not the Formatted citation and you can edit that inline.

Other regulars in this forum have more experience with Bookends than I do, and should correct any mistakes in what follows. Here's my sense of how these things work:

Although Mellel can turn delimited text entered by hand into citation objects that can be scanned and unscanned by Bookends, it can’t reverse the process by turning existing citation objects into delimited text you can edit using a global find and replace.

Unscanned citation objects are ignored by find and replace, and can only be edited one by one — a process that can happen in either Mellel or Bookends.

But once a citation object is scanned, it becomes visible to global find and replace and can be edited like any other text. My sense is that you’ll lose any changes you make in this way if you subsequently unseen the document. I’m not sure what kind of bulk editing you’re trying to do, but it may be possible to do it after you’ve scanned your document for the last time.

That is not correct. You can find and replace within temp citations. If your search is defined as "everywhere" then Mellel will go into citations, find and replace.

Try this
1. Create a new document.
2. Insert a citation manually (from the palette).
3. Type "hello world"
4. Now type "hello world" in the document body text.
5. Open the find, make sure it is on "everywhere" (the default).
6. Type "hello" in the find field.
7. Type "greetings" in the replace field.
8. Click "replace all"
The word "hello" inside the citation, as well as the word hello outside the citation, should be replaced with "greetings".
