sorry for bringing up this sensitive subject, but what is the state of play with the beta? Any chances we see the release anytime soon?

I don't understand the rational behind this secrecy. Can we at least get a list of issues addressed in this beta?

Still nothing...
I guess I'll be having a closer look at Nisus.

Mellel 2.5 is in beta 27 now. I'm not allowed to talk about it. Suffice to say - very impressed.

There is no big secret and (as a beta tester myself) I don't think we're sworn to secrecy. The beta testing is essentially over the next full version should be out soon. It's excellent and those who have been waiting for cross-refs will be very pleased. It's heaps better than the cross-refs for Nisus, etc.

I've been using the betas since they first came out and am most impressed as well. Worth waiting just a little longer since the final version shouldn't be far off.

Thanks for sharing the info. It's good to know the new mellel version IS coming and that it looks good.

Just to peep in with the official response: the beta is advancing very well, and we expect to have the final version released in a matter of days.

A little bit about our policy here:

We don't believe that betas should be secret -- our beta testers receive all the info (sorry for not responding to the request to enter the beta group. It was a bit late in the process for this beta (the 9th version of it).

We believe, however, that public betas do not benefit either the public nor the testing of the beta. A public beta exposes the public to a non-finished product, with all the hazards entailed in this, while the developer ditches responsibility -- that's not the way to go, we think. To add to that -- this rarely benefits the testing process.

Thanks, Ori. You've been putting out such a great product. I look forward to 2.5 being officially released soon.

Cheers.

A concluding comment to the thread I guess. For a moment I feared that the discussion would go into an entirely different direction than intended - my original question was about the time of the release and that only. As far as the beta process is concerned, I'll start working with the new version as soon as it becomes available, I have no doubt about the quality of the final product, or about the efforts of the Redlers to make it top notch.

Since the beta is no secret, can i ask about what else we can expect? Everyone and their dog knows xrefs are here, but is anything else coming?

Although it seems relatively minor, I'm dying for quicklook support. It has easily become one of the most used features of the Mac OS for me, and to not have my main word processor support it is aggrevating to say the least.

Of course, that is just my cup of tea. there are hundreds of other requests— are any else coming along with the awesome-sounding xrefs?

sorry, no quicklook. But the Spotlight problems are fixed (at least for those who had 'em).

Auto-titles can now be formatted on an ad-hoc basis. That changes things a bit in the autotitle flow setup.

The CRs are very good indeed, though there's still a bit of work needed on the export side. Note: the CRs play along nicely with PDF (clickable links).

There could be more - but then I just scratch the surface. As usual.

verma more or less summed it up. With X-refs we've tried, more or less, to create a state-of-the-art feature (i.e., FrameMaker and then some). You'll be able to judge for yourself soon if we've succeeded. We plan to further polish this, and add QuickLook, with 2.5.5 which will come soon and will be a bug-fix-release-come-intermediate-release.
