When I try to open with the present version of Mellel some old Mellel documents, I get the message

The document “……” could not be opened. zipFolderFromTo failed error = 2, dest = /var/folders/d2/y7nnf3bx1cjfxx73pxn60w9c0000gn/T/mellel_temp_0.extension, more = -

How can I solve this?

If you would like to test a Mellel document, the command unzip -t myfile.mellel will list the component parts of the document, which is a zip file.

No modification will be done to the file.

That works on Mellel 5. I think it works on Mellel 4 files, too, but I'm uncertain.
