Feature request: Side pane as a palette?

Just a thought, but how about saving some screen space and making the outline/story/index side panes available as palettes? I realise it would require more scrolling, but it might be a worthwhile trade-off. Currently, I'm looking at a big chunk of grey space beneath a fairly short journal article outline.
Alternatively, it would result in a better use of screen space if the show/hide side pane button added the pane to the editing window rather than squeezing it into the same window so that the editing pane is reduced. In other words, I set the editing pane to the width and in the place I want, and then the side pane is added to the left without changing either the size or the position of the editing window.
