Mellel index references not exportable?

A side question to my question on indexing based on a word-list: I have tried to index a few words in my mellel file, then export the file to
-docx
-rtf
in both case the index references were lost when I tried to open these files with word.
Am I right in saying that creating an index in Mellel is a loss of times if we need to export the file to another word-processor? Index references created in Mellel are ot exportable?
